Ram Gopal Varma’s Rangeela: A Fantastical Romantic Comedy With a Brilliant Soundtrack
Rangeela has everything- vibrant colors, beautifully shot and choreographed dance sequences, and the best soundtrack (by A R Rahman) of 1995 that has stayed relevant even now. Rangeela doesn’t really focus on a plot; it’s more about its characters. Urmila Matondkar is celestially beautiful, energetic, and keeps you constantly engaged. Aamir is quite funny and effective, while Jackie Shroff is his suave and handsome self. The film really focuses a lot on Urmila’s beauty. Even though this film gave her the impression of being a sex symbol, she was definitely much more than that.
A R Rahman’s debut Hindi soundtrack adds a certain edge and quirkiness to Rangeela. This was a time when Hindi movies had dream sequences (good old days) in the movies. Rangeela does it best with songs like Mangta Hai Kya, Rangeela Re, and Hai Rama. Tanha Tanha and Kya Kare Kya Na Kare are still two of the best tracks from the album and my personal favorite. It is said that Asha Bhosle and Aamir Khan weren’t quite convinced with the songs when they were first narrated to them.
